Southern Holds Off Grambling 7–5 to Take Series Opener

Box Score
GRAMBLING, LA -- Southern used timely hitting and just enough pitching to hold off Grambling, securing a 7-5 win in game one of the weekend series at Wilbert Ellis Field.

Southern jumped out early and never trailed, plating runs in four of the first five innings to build a cushion. The Jaguars scored three runs in the 2nd inning and added single runs in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th to take control.

Grambling made things interesting late, scoring four runs in the 8th inning, but Southern's bullpen shut the door in the 9th to seal the victory. Southern finished with 7 runs on 6 hits, while Grambling tallied 5 runs on 8 hits, but defensive miscues proved costly for the Tigers.

Keys to Victory

1. Early Offensive Pressure

Southern capitalized early, scoring in bunches before Grambling could settle in. The 3-run second inning set the tone and forced Grambling to play from behind all night.

2. Clutch Situational Hitting

Despite only 6 hits, Southern produced 5 RBI's, maximizing opportunities with runners on base.

3. Strong Start on the Mound

Bobby Spencer (W) delivered a quality outing: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 6 K

He limited damage and kept Grambling quiet through the middle innings.

4. Bullpen Holds Late

5. Capitalizing on Errors

Grambling committed 3 errors, and Southern took advantage of extra opportunities to generate offense.

By the Numbers

Southern

  • Runs: 7
  • Hits: 6
  • Errors: 1
  • Left on Base: 9

Grambling

  • Runs: 5
  • Hits: 8
  • Errors: 3
  • Left on Base: 11
Southern didn't overpower Grambling statistically—but they were more efficient, cleaner defensively, and better in key moments. That combination was enough to withstand Grambling's late push and take Game 1 of the series

Up Next:
Southern will be back in action Saturday afternoon for game 2 of the weekend series against Grambling at 3 PM.
