Pitching, Pressure Plays Carry Southern Past Morehead State, 5–3

BATON ROUGE, LA — Southern University used steady pitching, aggressive base running, and capitalized on miscues to earn a 5–3 victory over Morehead State on Friday night at Lee–Hines Field.

Southern jumped out early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. After loading the bases, the Jaguars plated a run on an error and added another on a wild pitch to take a 2–0 lead.

Morehead State answered in the second when D. Germann doubled to left to drive in I. McCubbin, cutting the deficit to 2–1. Southern responded quickly in the bottom half, extending the lead to 3–1 as White, Jr. scored on a sacrifice ground-out.

The Eagles evened the score in the fourth inning with back-to-back RBI doubles from N. Griffith and J. Correa, knotting the game at 3–3.

Southern regained control in the fifth. A passed ball allowed Kameron Byrd to score, giving the Jaguars a 4–3 advantage. The insurance run came in the seventh when Brant Stewart grounded out to second base, bringing home Byrd to push the lead to 5–3.

On the mound, Southern starter Bobby Spencer delivered a strong performance, working six innings while striking out 12 and allowing three runs. Myles Dismute closed the door in relief, tossing three scoreless innings with four strikeouts to secure the win.

Offensively, Byrd led the Jaguars with two hits and two runs scored, while Xavier Bradley reached base three times. Southern finished with seven hits and took advantage of five walks and multiple passed balls.

"Our potching set the tone, and we did enough offensively to win," said Head Coach Chris Cfrenshaw.

Southern improved to 4–6 on the season, while Morehead State dropped to 3–6. The teams continue the series Saturday in Baton Rouge at 6 PM. The game will be streamed live on Jaguar Sports Network.
