Former Southern University men's basketball star Cleophus Banks, Jr., will be remembered during an 11 a.m. funeral service Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Union Springs Baptist Church in Shreveport.
The funeral will be in Shreveport at 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Springs Baptist Church, 702 West 71st St. Interment will follow at Lincoln Cemetery. Banks, who was an ordained deacon, will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday at St. Peter B.C., 533 E. Dalzell St., with family hour beginning at 6:30 p.m. at St. Peter B.C.
Banks was a standout basketball and baseball player at Booker T. Washington High School in Shreveport, graduating in 1963 and earning scholarships to Southern in both sports.
Banks played on a Jaguars team that reached the quarterfinals of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) tournament in 1965. He was inducted into the Southern University Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
Cleophus was known as a dedicated and diligent worker. He was employed by Caddo Parish Schools and served as an assistant librarian at Southern University at Shreveport. He was best known for his community and civic role as the first City Wide Director of the Police-Community Relations (PCR) which later became known as Neighborhood Assistance Team (NAT).
