Jaguars Grind Out Win Over Mississippi Valley State

BATON ROUGE, La. | Southern University men's basketball showcased its toughness and composure Wednesday afternoon, pulling away late for an 80-69 SWAC victory over Mississippi Valley State inside the F.G. Clark Activity Center. The win marked another gritty conference performance as the Jaguars continued to build momentum in league play.

Southern (8–12, 4–3 SWAC) controlled the tempo early, shooting efficiently and attacking the paint to take a 41-32 halftime lead. The Jaguars leaned on defensive pressure and balanced scoring to withstand multiple Valley runs throughout the second half.

Michael Jacobs delivered a strong all-around performance, leading the Jaguars with 22 points and seven assists, while knocking down 9-of-10 free throws to seal the game late. 
Southern dominated inside all afternoon, scoring 42 points in the paint and converting 24-of-29 free throws, a decisive edge in a physical contest. The Jaguars also capitalized on Valley turnovers, turning them into 23 points. 

Terrance Dixon Jr. added 18 points, shooting an efficient 7-for-9 from the field, while also contributing defensively with three blocks and two steals. DaMariee Jones was a force on the glass, posting a double-double with 13 points and a career high 14 rebounds.

Southern's depth proved critical, as the bench combined for 27 points, led by Malek Abdelgowad who chipped in 13 points and five rebounds.

  • Southern shot 50.percent (27-of-53) from the floor, 16.7 percent (2-of-12) from the 3-point line and 82.8percent (24-of-29) from the free-throw line
  • The Jaguars grabbed 33 rebounds, with 24 coming on the defensive glass

  • Delta Devils grabbed 34 rebounds, with 22 coming on the defensive end
  • Michael James paced MVSU with 23 points
  • Daniel Mayfield added 18 points and 15 rebounds
  • Xzayvion Childress finished with 16 points and five assist
  • MVSU finished with 16 points in the paint,  10 second chance points, eight fast break points, seven points off 12 SU turnovers and one bench point
