The Southern Jaguars fell behind big early and although they mounted a furious comeback, they were not able to get over the hump, when Blake Sanford missed two 3-pointers with less than 1:30 remaining, helping the Grambling State Tigers hold on for a 61-57 victory Saturday night before a crowd of 1,387 at the Grambling Assembly Center.
The Tigers (3-12, 1-2 SWAC) shot 51.5 percent (17 of 33) in the first half, including 5 of 10 from 3-point range, and led 40-20 at halftime.
Grambling State led by as many as 22, 46-24, on Rupert Rose's layup with 16:39 left to play.
The Jaguars (2-13, 1-2 SWAC) then answered with a 24-6 run. Brandon White's free throw brought it to 52-48 with 5:35 remaining. However, Southern wouldn't get any closer than four the rest of the way.
The Jaguars played without small forward Quinton Doggett, who left Thursday's game complaining of chest pains.
The Jaguars haven't won at Grambling since 2000, although the GSU has an average margin of victory of only 3.4 points.
