JAGUARS BLOW LEAD, FALL TO TULANE 68-65

Dec. 26, 2010

Final Stats

Tulane University's Kendall Timmons scored 21 points as the Green Wave rallied to defeat Southern University 68-65 on Thursday afternoon at the Mini-Dome on the Southern campus.

Jordan Callahan added 19 points for Tulane (8-3), which finished 8-22 in 2009-10.

The Green Wave trailed 29-25 at halftime, then by six early in the second half.

Tulane then went on a 10-0 run, beginning with a Kris Richard layup and followed by a Timmons dunk and two 3-pointers.

Southern (1-10) regained the lead twice, but the Green Wave used an 11-0 run to pull ahead 51-43 and widened the gap to 62-48.

After a 10-0 Southern spurt made it 62-58 with 1:08 left, the Green Wave hit 6 of 8 free throws, including two by Callahan with 3 seconds left.

Blake Sanford led Southern with a game-high 22 points. Brandon White had an outstanding afternoon, barely missing a triple double, as he scored 12 points to go with 10 rebounds and six assists. Jameel Grace chipped in 10 points and six assists.

Tulane's big move started with 11 minutes, 17 seconds to play, as Kris Richard hit two free throws to begin a 22-5 spurt. By the 4:11 mark, the Green Wave had turned a 43-40 deficit into a game-best 62-48 lead.

Southern turned back a pair of earlier 10-0 runs, recovering to regain the lead each time. It responded to the big one, too, but the hole proved too much to overcome.

Southern pulled within 62-58 with 1:10 remaining and 66-62 with five seconds showing. But the Green Wave continued to make free throws, finishing with a whopping 25 points from the charity stripe.

A buzzer-beating heave by Southern's Brandon White provided the final margin.

The Jaguars played their second game without leading rebounder Quinton Doggett, who sprained his knee during practice last week. Their losing streak grew to eight games, and Southern (1-10) stayed winless against Tulane in four all-time meetings.

Ultimately, Tulane's ability to get to the free-throw line proved to be the difference. The Green Wave attempted 33 foul shots, while Southern managed only 10.

Southern U. faces LSU at the PMAC on the LSU campus at 6:00 PM Monday evening.
