SOUTHERN PICKS UP NEEDED WIN IN ROUT OF DILLARD

Dec. 31, 2007

Final Stats

Dillard (4-4) kept it close for about five minutes, leading 11-8 after a layup and free throw by Marion Washington.

But Barry Honore hit a layup and Steffon Wiley a 3-point shot to put the Jaguars (2-9) ahead for good, 13-11, with 13:58 left in the quarter. Southern led 48-31 at halftime.

Ingram hit all six of his field goal attempts and went five for five from the free throw line before fouling out late in the second half.

Honore' finished with 14 points, and Wiley and Joe Holliday with 11 points each. Honre' and Holiday each had six rebounds, while Wiley pulled down five.

David Manning led Dillard with 12 points; Demarcus Hall added 11.

This was a much needed win for the Jags who were playing just their second home game of the season. Southern went 50 days betweens wins, with their first coming on opening night at SMU. SU has yet to play a home game with school in session.

Southern scored season highs in a half (48) and game (86). It was the third time this season the Jaguars have scored more than 70 points.

The Jaguars finished with season highs in all shooting categories: field goals (29-of-49, 59.2 percent), 3-point field goals (6-of-12, 50 percent) and free throws (22-of-31, 71 percent). Southern also swatted a season-high 10 shots with Joseph Jack rejecting four shots and Barry Honore' three shots.

"We needed a win," Southern third-year coach Rob Spivery said. "We've worked hard in our practices. We needed to get off to a very good start and we did that. We shot the ball well. I thought we played aggressive defensively."

Southern opens Southwestern Athletic Conference play Saturday at Prairie View A&M.

"We'll be ready for SWAC," Ingram said. "We did get down a little during this losing streak. Coach did a lot to keep the team up. We've got to cut down on our turnovers as a team. We've got a second chance now with SWAC. We're excited about it."

"Although we lost a number of games, we understood that every game was on the road and against good basketball teams," Spivery said. "I didn't feel like the team got down on itself. I think we're where we needed to be at this point. We'll have to play with poise in conference. We're really coming together."
