Junior forward, Alvin Mott, came off the bench to score a career high 21 points
that included 3-of-4 on three-pointers and was perfect on eight free throws to
lead the Southern Jaguars to a 69-57 win over Alcorn State on Saturday night.
The victory clinches at least a share of the Southwestern Athletic Conference
regular season title for the Jaguars (14-12, 13-3) after Grambling (12-10, 10-5)
lost to Arkansas Pine-Bluff, 78-68.
The last time the Southern Jaguars won the SWAC regular season -- the
1989-90 campaign.
Mott, along with center Jared Campbell (11 points on 5-of-9 shooting) were
two of the few sharpshooters for Southern. Guard Chris Alexander hit just 4-of-15,
including 1-of-6 from outside the arc, to finish with 12.
"He's (Mott) been playing well for us lately, scoring in double
figures. For a while there, he was really what we had offensively," said
SU coach Rob Spivery. "Any time you can have that type of player offensively
off the bench, you really have an advantage. I thought he did an excellent job
tonight."
Play was tightly contested for the first 13 minutes of the first half, before
SU went on a 16-4 run and took a 45-32 lead to the dressing room.
Peter Cipriano was a demon on the boards, snaring 16 rebounds, an equal number
at each end, single-handedly accounting for SU's 42-27 rebounding advantage.
The win puts Southern in position to wrap up the SWAC regular season championship
on Thursday night against Prairie View A&M. Southern will then close out
the regular season on Saturday night against Texas Southern. Southern is 8-0
on its home court this season.
