BATON ROUGE -- The futility against cross-town
rival LSU continued, as the Tigers rolled to a 84-56 win over the Southern Jaguars
at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the LSU campus. SU's record fall to
(0-3) on the young season.
LSU dominated the boards, outrebounding the Jaguars 55 to 23
for the game. LSU had one less offensive rebound (22), than the Jags whole total.
They used their inside advantage to score 28 second chance points to SU's six.
The Tigers also were strong in the pain, outscoring the SU Jaguars 48-22 down
low.
"In the game of basketball, there are two areas where
you really show toughness. That's on defense and in rebounding," first-year
Southern coach Rob Spivery said. "We didn't show very much toughness out
there and the difference in the boards showed that. They had as many offensive
rebounds as we had total rebounds and that's unacceptable. We have to get better
and show more toughness than we showed."
"I didn't think we played well at all tonight,"
said Spivery. "I'm not sure if it was the trip that we just came
off of (Guardian's Classic in Austin, TX), but we didn't play with
any energy and that's disappointing. I thought we made strides against
Sacramento State, but we digressed tonight."
Chris Alexander led the Jaguars scoring with 13 points. Deforrest
Riley-Smith added 12. Alvin Mott finished with 8 points and five rebounds, to
lead SU in rebounding.
After jumping out to an early lead, the Jags came racing back
with back to back buckets by Chris Alexander
LSU would lead by double figures early, 18-8, at the 11:53
mark and led by as much as 18 points twice in the half before settling for a
15-point, 43-28, halftime lead.
Southern was never able to make a push in the second half,
and LSU took thier largest lead of the game with 1:35 left, with a 82-53 score.
Southern shot 38.3 percent (23-of-60) from the floor, 5-of-16
from the 3-point arc and 5-of-9 from the free-throw line. LSU shot 48.4 percent
for the game (31-64) and 4-of-13 at the three-point arc and 18-of-29 at the
free throw line.
"We have some work to do. We as coaches have to do a
better job from a coaching aspect and making sure the players understand what
we need to do on the floor. We need to get them to execute better defensively
and offensively," said Spivery.
Southern hits the road for College Station, Texas, where the
Jaguars will take on Texas A&M at 7 p.m. Sunday.
