Adell Davenport Announced to the 2025 SWAC Hall of Fame Class

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) announced the 2025 Hall of Fame class on Friday afternoon with one individual that has Southern University ties on the list.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference has announced its 2025 SWAC Hall of Fame Class which is set to be enshrined on Friday, December 12th, 2025. The enshrinement ceremony is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. EST at the Omni Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.

The newest members of the SWAC Hall of Fame were chosen from a list of nominees who were submitted by their respective institutions and selected by the SWAC Hall of Fame Selection Committee.

The 2025 Hall of Fame Honorees includes Grambling State's Albert Dennis III (Legend), Jackson State's Shawn Gregory, Mississippi Valley State's Ashley Robinson, Southern's Adell Davenport, and the SWAC's Milton Taylor (Contributor) and Byron Johnson (Legend).

A trailblazer in Southern University baseball history, Adell was one of the first Jaguar athletes to earn multiple All-Conference selections, leaving an indelible mark on the program during a golden era under legendary head coach Roger Cador.

A versatile infielder, Adell made immediate waves as a freshman in 1986, earning the title of SWAC Freshman of the Year and being named a Third Team Freshman All-American. That year, he helped guide the Jaguars to a SWAC Western Division Championship, leading the team with 13 home runs, 47 RBI's, and ranking second in hits with 63. Southern finished the season 18–11 in SWAC play, and 22–27 overall.

In 1987, Adell elevated his game and helped lead SU to one of its most historic seasons—claiming the SWAC Western Division and SWAC Tournament Championships, and securing an NCAA Regional appearance. That postseason, Southern made history as the first HBCU to win a first-round NCAA Regional game, defeating powerhouse Cal-State Fullerton 1–0 in New Orleans. Adell was a driving force behind that success, finishing first on the team with 71 RBI's and 20 home runs, while collecting 72 hits. He was recognized as:

  • 1st Team All-SWAC – First Base
  • 1987 SWAC Player of the Year
  • A.W. Mumford Athlete of the Year

Southern wrapped up that season with a stellar 20–4 SWAC record and 31–22 overall mark.

His 1988 season was equally impressive. The Jaguars once again captured the SWAC Western Division and Tournament Championships, earning a spot in the NCAA Austin Regional. Southern finished with a 16–8 SWAC record and 28–21 overall. Adell led the team in hits (61) and home runs (16), while driving in 57 RBI's, second on the team. He closed out his college career with another set of elite honors:

  • 1st Team All-SWAC – Third Base
  • SWAC Player of the Year
  • SWAC Hitter of the Year
Following his stellar collegiate career, Adell was selected in the 18th round of the MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants, continuing the proud tradition of Jaguar excellence at the professional level.

A powerful hitter, clutch performer, and consistent leader, His legacy remains a cornerstone in Southern University baseball history. His induction to the Southern University Sports Hall of Fame in 2018 is a celebration of both his remarkable achievements and his lasting impact on the program.
