ITTA BENA, MS — Southern University continued its surge through Southwestern Athletic Conference play Saturday, pounding out 15 hits in an 8-1 victory over Mississippi Valley State to secure its fourth consecutive weekend series win.
The Jaguars broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning and never looked back, backing a dominant outing from right-hander Myles Dismute.
Dismute (6-2) delivered six strong innings, allowing just one unearned run on six hits while striking out nine and walking one. He set the tone early, retiring nine of the first 10 batters he faced and consistently working out of limited trouble.
Southern's offense did the rest.
Ryan Hunter led the charge, going 3-for-4 with two RBI's and a walk, while Jaylon Lucky added three hits and two RBI's of his own.Kameron Byrd chipped in two hits and an RBI, and Kenyon Hughes scored twice and drove in another as the Jaguars controlled the game from start to finish.
After plating two runs in the second inning, Southern broke things open in the fourth. Lucky delivered a two-run single, Byrd followed with an RBI knock, and Jacoby Radcliffe capped the rally with a run-scoring fielder's choice to push the lead to 6-0.
The Jaguars tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by Hunter's RBI single and Glenn Green III run-scoring double.
Mississippi Valley (11-30) managed just one run — an unearned tally in the fifth inning — and struck out 10 times against Southern pitching.
