ITTA BENA, MS — Southern University erupted for 17 hits and rode a dominant start from Bobby Spencer to a 12-2 victory over Mississippi Valley in the opening game of a weekend series Friday afternoon.
Southern set the tone early, scoring three runs in the first inning and never looking back. Glenn Green III powered the offense with a 3-for-6 day that included a home run, two doubles, and four RBI's, while Jacoby Radcliffe added three RBI's as part of a balanced Jaguars attack.
Spencer (8-3) was sharp on the mound, tossing seven shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out eight to earn the win.
Mississippi Valley managed just seven hits and didn't score until the eighth inning, when it pushed across two runs against the Southern bullpen.
Southern wasted no time jumping ahead. After Ryan Hunter doubled to open the game, the Jaguars strung together timely hits, highlighted by Green III two-run double, to build a 3-0 lead in the first.
The Jaguars continued to apply pressure, adding single runs in the second, fourth, and sixth innings before breaking it open late with three runs in the ninth. Southern also capitalized on the Mississippi Valley's defensive struggles, as the Delta Devils committed three errors.
Jaylon Lucky homered and drove in a run, while Hunter and Green III each collected three hits. Southern finished with 11 RBI's and 12 runs on 17 hits.
