Prairie View, TX – The beginning of the final postseasons for the 2021-2022 athletic calendar year begins when the Jaguar Track and Field teams take the track Thursday through Saturday for the Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships at the Prairie View A&M Track Stadium.
Events will start on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. with the men's javelin followed by the 10,000m, women's pole vault, Decathlon, Heptathlon and hammer throw. Friday will start at 8 a.m. with the final events of the Decathlon and Heptathlon. At the conclusion of those events, shot-put, long jump, women's javelin and the prelims for the running events. Saturday will start at 9 a.m. with the discus, triple jump, high jump, men's pole vault and the finals of the running events.
Southern currently has 41 athletes inside the top-10 in the SWAC. The women have a total of 21 athletes, with 14 of them in the field events and seven on the track. The men are split right down the middle with 10 for both the track and field events.
The Lady Jaguars currently have four athletes and two relay teams in the scoring positions for the meet.
Trinity Bolden currently leads the 100m with a time of 11.6 seconds at the 94th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays from March 23. Bolden is also in sixth for the 200m with a time of 24.44 seconds.
A'nijah Williams and
Trinity Kirk give the Lady Jags one-two combo in the 400m. Williams and Kirk posted their best times at the LSU Battle on the Bayou. Williams currently sits in second at 55.5 and Kirk is in sixth at 55.98.
Jada Chevalier has made her mark in the 100m hurdles. With a time of 13.99 seconds,
Jada Chevalier sits in fourth heading into the championships.
Both relay teams sit in good spots heading into conference action. The 4x100 team of
Kennedy Pedro, Kirk,
A'niya Galloway and Bolden sit in second with a time of 46.29. The team of
Shani Simon, Kirk, Williams and
Qymeisha Mayhew sit in fifth for the 4x400 with a time of 3:47.35. Both times were run at the Joe Walker Invitational on April 8.
The field events are where the Lady Jaguars have excelled all season. A total of nine athletes makes up the 14 spots inside the top-10 for their respective field events.
Yahria Bass is the lone jumper in the group. She sits in sixth with a distance of 5.65m at the Strawberry Relays.
The shot-put, discus and hammer throw see the same names in each event.
Lawrenee' Hart is one of two Southern athletes to be listed in the top-10 in three individual events. Hart sits in fifth for the shot-put (13.16m), seventh for the discus (38.49m) and eighth for the hammer (45.15m).
Logan Lewis is second in discus (43.04m) and fourth in shot-put (13.6m).
A'ja Gore is sitting in seventh (12.78m), as the only other Lady Jaguar in shot-put.
Jazzmine Poole is third in discus (42.26m) and sixth in the hammer (46.31m), while
Schrell Chevalier is eighth in discus (37.58m) and 10th in the hammer (44.95m).
Alexandria McCoy sits in second for the hammer throw at 40.22m but could have a big day in the other events as well.
The final throws for the women see two Lady Jaguars sitting in scoring position. The Javelin has
Uzuri Graves in fifth (34.08m) and
Karanay Alexander in seventh (32.38m).
The men's side see things split more evenly between the track and field events. Six individuals and two relays comprise the 10 spots in the track event, while seven athletes take up the 10 for the field events.
DeAnthony Nervis has his eyes set on four events. Nervis is in outstanding position to earn points in the 100m, 200m, 4x100 and 4xx400. His time of 10.45 puts him in seventh for the 100m, while his time of 21.02 is good enough for third in the 200m.
Kason Jones is lone Jaguar in the SWAC rankings for the 400m. He ran a 47.52 at the LSU Battle on the Bayou to sit him in second. The 800m indoor champion,
Nicholas Scott currently holds that same position for the outdoor season with a time of 1:49.45.
Rushane Miller also sits in sixth with a time of 1:54.34 giving the Jaguars another one-two combo.
Jordan Thompson will also be looking to score points in four events. Thompson currently sits in second for both the 110m (14.56) and 400m (52.1) hurdles. Thompson will also be apart of both relay teams. He is joined by
Ta'Cardrick Alexander in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.14 for eighth.
The team of Jones, Nervis,
Kavin Roberts Jr. and Thompson sit in fifth in the 4x100 with a time of 41.24, while the team of Thompson, Jones, Nervis and Scott has the best time in the 4x400 at 3:10.6.
Ja'Carrius Demmerritte has focused more on the long jump during the outdoor season but can put up big numbers in the triple jump too. His distance of 7.04m in the long jump has him sitting in seventh.
Kevon Hamilton sits in sixth with a distance of 14.79m for the triple jump.
The throws will be another big area for the Jaguars to score points.
Char'Vares Wilson is the other Southern athlete to be inside the top-10 in three individual events. He sits in seventh for the shot-put (14.48m), seventh in the discus (41.73m) and eighth in the hammer (39.97m).
Keenan Villery joins him in the shot-put standings at fourth (15.19m), while also being third in the javelin (50.92m).
Garrick Breaux sits in eight for the discus (41.70).
Kolby Mathews (38.32m) and
London Lewis (36.64m) round out the top-10 in the hammer.
