Alase Breaks SWAC Record, Posts NCAA’s Top Time and World’s No. 2 Mark

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southern University track and field team delivered a series of standout performances at the 2026 SWAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, highlighted by conference titles, podium finishes, and one of the fastest hurdle performances in the world this season.
 
The Lady Jaguars finished third overall with 95.5 points, while the men's team placed seventh with 64.5 points.
 
Tashina Alase headlined the weekend with a historic performance in the women's 100-meter hurdles, blazing to the conference title in a SWAC-record time of 12.64 seconds. The mark moved Alase back to No. 1 in the NCAA this season and No. 2 in the world in 2026, cementing her status as one of the premier hurdlers in collegiate track and field. Her time also continued a dominant outdoor campaign that has consistently placed her among the nation's elite and strengthened her position as a national title contender heading into postseason competition. Alase later added more points for Southern with a third-place finish in the women's 200 meters after clocking 23.62.
 
Southern also saw tremendous success in the field events. Ariyonna Edmond claimed the women's hammer throw championship with a mark of 54.43 meters, while teammate Layla Spann-McDonald earned a bronze-medal finish in the event with a throw of 50.16 meters. Roman Smith added another conference title for the Jaguars after clearing 2.12 meters to win the men's high jump, while Keith Fowler finished runner-up in the same event.
 
The Jaguars continued to pile up points in the throws as Everett Alberty placed second in the men's javelin with a toss of 61.88 meters. Kinzli Zenon also earned a runner-up finish in the women's javelin at 38.43 meters. Michael Fulton contributed with a sixth-place finish in the men's hammer throw and later added points in the shot put with an 11th-place showing.
 
On the track, Marcus Delcy captured silver in the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:51.07, while Keeton Johnson scored in two distance events, placing fifth in the 800 meters before earning runner-up honors in the men's 1500 meters with a mark of 4:01.37. Omari Dupas added a fifth-place finish in the men's 100 meters, and Christon Washington finished seventh in the men's 110-meter hurdles.
 
Southern also earned valuable points in the jumps as Peyton Funderburk took third in the women's long jump, Azariah Foster finished sixth, and Kol Wedderburn placed seventh in the men's long jump. Lauren Joshua added a sixth-place finish in the women's pole vault.
 
In relay competition, the Lady Jaguars earned a third-place finish in the women's 4x100-meter relay, while the men's 4x100-meter relay team placed fourth overall.
 
Up Next
Southern will now await selections for the NCAA East Regional, which will be held in Lexington, Kentucky, on the campus of the University of Kentucky.
