BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern University's Tashina Alase and Taylor Hankton were named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Week following their performances at the LSU Alumni Gold, the league announced Wednesday.

Alase delivered one of the top performances in the nation over the weekend. The senior hurdler clocked a school-record 12.71 in the 100-meter hurdles to take over the NCAA lead and rank fourth in the world this season. She finished 0.25 seconds ahead of LSU's Adeyah Brewster and surpassed Kentucky's Emmi Scales, who previously held the collegiate lead at 12.75. In the current world rankings, Alase trails only Marione Fourie of South Africa, Rayniah Jones of the United States and Vitoria Alves of Brazil.

Alase also recorded a personal-best time of 23.81 in the 200 meters and ran a leg on Southern's 4x100-meter relay team that posted a time of 45.47.

Hankton turned in a strong showing in the 400-meter hurdles, setting a personal-best time of 58.41. The mark ranks 30th in the NCAA East Region and 65th nationally this season. She also contributed to the Jaguars' 4x100-meter relay performance.

The weekly honor marks Alase's third of the season after previous awards on April 2 and April 17. It is the first career conference honor for the freshman Hankton.
