Southern Knocks Off Alcorn to Take Over First Place In The West

With a five run lead and bases loaded, Jovante Dorris steps to the plate and takes the third pitch 375 feet over the left field wall to recording a Grand Slam to give the Jags their ninth run in the bottom of the first inning.

The Jaguars picked up twenty-one runs off twelve hits on the day. In the first inning the Jags pick up nine runs lead by Dorris with two runs in the inning. In the second inning Nathaniel Lai scored off a double to right field by Taj Porter. In the third inning Dorris singled through left field sending Justin Wiley across home plate to give the Jags their eleventh run of the day. O'Neill Burgos and Dorris scored off a single to center field by JJ Rollon. Lai doubled to left center to send Tremaine Spears and Rollon across home plate to give the Jaguars a 15-0 lead over the Braves. Hunter Tabb singled to the left field wall to send Nathaniel Lai home to close ou the inning with a 16-0 lead. In the fifth inning the Jags pick up five more runs to give the Jags a 21-1 lead.  

"We had a good start from Joseph Battaglia and quality at bats for us to come out on top tonight, said Chris Crenshaw, Southern Head Coach. 

Battaglia goes 8-4 on the season throwing 43 pitches with two strike outs and only giving up one hit on the day. The Jaguars scoring came from Dorris and Lai with three runs each. Armstrong, Burgos, Spears and Rollon with two runs each. Walter, Porter, Tart, Wiley, Adams, Tabb and Mack  with one run each.

SU is 22-29, 19-9 SWAC on the season. 

Up Next
Southern will be back in action on Friday night for game two of the final home series of the season, as they take on Alcorn State University for a three game weekend series. First pitch is slated for 6 PM.
