BIRMINGHAM, AL – Two members of the Southern University Lady Jaguar Bowling program were name to the all-conference teams announced by the Southwestern Athletic Conference. All-conference selection was biased on the results from the two roundups. Bowlers must have a minimum of 19 games and were ranked on average.
"I am not surprised that two of my freshmen made all-SWAC teams," Head Coach
Barry Doyle said.
Freshman
Jailyn Rogers had an average of 194.25 for 28 games, which was good for fourth overall in the SWAC to put her on the first team. Fellow freshman
Hannah Grather finished with a 184.79 average in 19 games placing her eighth for second team.
"Jailyn is definitely living up to the expectations I had for her," said Doyle. "First team all-SWAC and Freshman of the Year speaks for itself."
Rogers had a superb start to her SWAC bowling career by also winning Freshman of the Year honors. The only Lady Jaguar to see action in all 28 games, Rogers finished with a pin count of 5,439.
Difficult lane conditions in the west round-up made bowlers focus on staying clean. Doing just that led Rogers to her first career collegiate tournament victory. Rogers finished with a 2,542-pin count for 14 games and a 181.57 average, one of two bowlers over 180.
The east round-up was the polar opposite from the previous tournament. Averaging 195.6 for the first day, Rogers had dropped to eighth overall. A big second day, set her up to finish comfortably inside the top-5 for first team all-conference.
Grather, a Gonzales, LA native, used a different route to make it into the top-10 for second team all-conference. Finishing with a 3,511 for 19 games.
"Hannah is peaking at the right time," Doyle said. "At the East Round-up something just clicked, and Hannah started striking and did not look back."
Only getting six games in the west round-up, Grather was in 30
th with a 161 average. Starting out with a 241, she used five 200 and four more 190 games to finish with 2,545 pins in 13 games. Grather's average of 195.77 in the east round-up was good enough for 11
th in average and 18
th in total pin fall. The big tournament made her average jump 23 pins and helped her jump 22 spots in the standings.
Having two freshmen make the all-conference team sets the Lady Jaguars to make some noise in the next couple of years.
"Our foundation is set for the next four years," Doyle mentioned about his freshman class. "Before their careers are over, I am sure plenty of hardware will come."
The Lady Jaguars will be back in action on March 3-6, when they travel to Atlanta for the TNBA/HBCU Tournament.
