BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern University freshman Maria Molina Diaz has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Bowler and Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
Â
Molina Diaz continued her dominant freshman campaign with a tournament MVP performance at the Southern Queens. She rolled a 1,051 total over five games, averaging 210.20 to lead a competitive field of 55 bowlers. Her performance marked another plus-series effort and further solidified her standing as one of the conference's top competitors.
Â
She also played a pivotal role in Baker match play, anchoring the Lady Jaguars as they defeated Florida A&M, Texas Southern and Grambling on Friday. Southern carried that momentum into bracket play Sunday, earning two wins over SWAC regular-season champion Jackson State.
Â
The Colombia native has been a model of consistency in her collegiate debut season, earning Second Team All-SWAC honors earlier this year. She has also qualified for the Colombia Junior National Team and will compete in the World Cup this summer.
Â
This marks Molina Diaz's second SWAC Bowler of the Week honor and her first Newcomer of the Week recognition
