ARLINGTON, Texas — The Southern University bowling team had multiple opportunities to secure a victory over Alabama A&M in the opening round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships at the International Training and Research Center, but ultimately fell 2-1 in the Mega Match format.
 
Southern opened strong, claiming the traditional game with an 839-785 victory. Despite the win, missed opportunities late, marked by several costly opens, hinted at struggles to come. Mikayla Stevens led the way with a 177, followed by Alanna Jones (174) and Maria Molina Diaz (170).
 
The momentum shifted in the Baker total pinfall segment, where the Lady Jaguars dropped all five games. Alabama A&M jumped out to a 61-pin advantage after a 248-187 opening game. Southern failed to capitalize on Bulldog miscues in game two, managing only to gain a single pin while recording four opens.
 
With Alabama A&M posting modest scores over the final three games, Southern had chances to close the gap. However, four opens in each of those contests proved costly, as the Lady Jaguars fell 956-830 in total pinfall.
 
The loss forced a decisive best-of-seven Baker match. Southern edged out a narrow 177-172 win in game one, but inconsistency quickly resurfaced. The Lady Jaguars recorded four opens in game two and six in game three, dropping both 196-164 and 163-124.
 
Southern responded with a strong 181-147 win in game four to even the match at 2-2, but the momentum was short-lived. Three opens and just one strike led to a 199-155 loss in game five. In game six, four more opens—including in the critical seventh, eighth, and ninth frames, sealed the outcome in a 181-154 defeat.

Southern will be off next weekend before returning to the lanes for the TNBA Invitational hosted by Jackson State at All Star Lanes in Baton Rouge.
