NEW ORLEANS, LA. -- Southern's fast start wasn't enough as UNO powered past the Jaguars 10-5, picking up 13 hits on the day at Maestri Field.
The Jaguars picked up five runs off 10 hits on the day. In the first inning
Zavier Moore hit a single to left field bringing in
Judah Wilbur for the score and advancing
Tremaine Spears to third. Then
Bubba Thompson grounded into a double play (1b to SS) to send Spears home to give the Jaguars a 2-0 lead over the Privateers.
During the third inning, Wilbur singled up the middle of the field right before Spears cracked a 330-yard Homer over the left field wall to give the Jaguars a 4-1 lead over the Privateers.
"We came out hot and had the moment early but there starter kept a level head, battled and made some plays when they needed too. We have to get better in the middle innings of the game but it was the first game of the season and my guys showed some fight at the end, hopefully that will carry us over into tomorrow when we show up to play", said
Chris Crenshaw, Southern Head Coach.
John Guienze picks up his first loss of the season throwing 58 pitches with 35 strikes and gave up five runs. The Jaguars scoring came from Spears and Wilbur with two runs each and the final run of the day for SU came from
Colton Frank.
SU is 0-1 on the season.
