Final Stats
Freda Allen scored 10 points and pulled down nine rebounds, none bigger than an offensive rebound in the final minute off of a missed free throw, to help lead the Southern Jaguars to a 46-43 win over rival Prairie View A&M at the FG Clark Activity Center.
With the win Southern U. moves to 5-7 overall and 2-0 in SWAC play.
In what wasn't the prettiest of games, Sandy Pugh's Jaguars grinded out a hard fought win over as conference rival in Prairie View A&M.
A tough first half of shooting from both teams but scrappy defense made for an entertaining game, but a nightmare for the coaches.
Southern took a 25-22 lead into the half, led by Hannah Kador's eight points and nine second chance points. Prairie View stayed close led by Latia Williams' 12 points, who was perfect from the field in the first half, going 5-5 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line.
It wouldn't take long for the Jaguars to climb back over the hump as forward Freda Allen rallied her troops to begin the second stanza. The Jaguars opened with a 4-0 run and claimed a 26-25 advantage with 18:05 to play. The Jaguars would extend their lead to as large as three points after a baseline jumper from Ashley Augerson putting the score at 28-25.
In back-and-forth fashion, both sides continued to trade leads as the half witnessed nine lead changes. With 1:16 remaining, Latia Williams gave Prairie View breathing room after knocking down a big shot to give the Lady Panthers a 43-42 lead. SU's Jamie Floyd hit one-of-two free throws to tie the game on the following possession and SU recorded a huge offensive rebound after Floyd's second attempt to regain possession of the game with 52 ticks remaining.
In an attempt to take the lead, Dominique Smith's three-pointer fell short forcing Prairie View to foul once again with 14 seconds left. PV still had a chance to tie the game as SU went 1-of-2 from the line but Smith's game-tying attempt went wide as SU closed out the game with 11.3 seconds remaining.
Latia Williams led the way for the Lady Panthers scoring 16 points while pulling down seven rebounds. Dominique Smith followed with 11 points while adding four rebounds, one assist and one steal while Robin Jones accounted for 10 points and seven rebounds.
Southern shot 23% from the floor on the night, while Prairie View shot just 28%.
To go with Allen's 10 points, Hannah Kador added nine points and three rebounds, as her shooting woes continued, as she went 1-11 from the field. Jamie Floyd added seven points and nine rounds off the bench, and Tiffany Foster added six points and five rebounds, while Ashley Augerson chipped in six points and four rebounds. Carneta Henderson also added six points four rebounds and three steals.
Southern did the small things in the win. The Jags pulled down 22 offensive rebounds, while collecting 44 rebounds for the game. SU out rebounded the Panthers by 11 boards. SU committed a season-low nine turnovers. And they made 14 of 17 free throws, including 4 of 6 in the final minute.
