Southern’s Season Ends, But A Legacy Lives On

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The final horn echoed through Colonial Life Arena, and while the scoreboard told a difficult story—Southern falling to South Carolina in the opening round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament—the numbers could never fully capture what this team accomplished.

This wasn't just the end of a game. It was the closing chapter of a golden era. From the opening tip, Southern battled. The Jaguars faced one of the nation's elite programs and never found a rhythm offensively, shooting just 18.5% from the field.

But within the struggle were moments that defined the team:

Even as the deficit grew, the effort never wavered. That was Southern basketball—resilient, proud, and unshaken.

This game marked the end for a senior group that didn't just compete—they continued the legacy of a championship program.

Xyllize Harrison

A cornerstone of the program:

  • 3× SWAC Champion
  • 3× NCAA Tournament appearances
  • 2× NCAA First Four winner

She was the embodiment of consistency and leadership, anchoring the team through every championship run.

D'Shantae Edwards

The engine in the backcourt:

  • 2× SWAC Champion
  • 2× NCAA Tournament appearances
  • 2× NCAA First Four winner

Her defensive toughness and poise helped define Southern's identity.

Kiana Wilson

Quiet strength, undeniable impact:

  • 2× SWAC Champion
  • 2× NCAA appearances
  • 2× NCAA First Four winner

Though her minutes were limited in the final game, her role in building this era cannot be measured by a box score.

Jaylia Reed

A competitor who delivered on the biggest stage:

  • SWAC Champion
  • NCAA Tournament appearance
  • NCAA First Four winner

From early contributions to her final NCAA moment, Reed's confidence never faded.

Olivia Delancy

A shooter with heart:

  • SWAC Champion
  • NCAA Tournament appearance
  • NCAA First Four winner

Her second-quarter three in the final game was symbolic—Southern would not go away quietly.

Demonnie Lagway

A steady presence:

  • SWAC Champion
  • NCAA Tournament appearance
  • NCAA First Four winner

Her impact extended beyond stats—bringing energy, composure, and belief.

More Than a Season — A Standard

This senior class didn't just win games.
They built expectations.

  • Multiple SWAC titles
  • Multiple NCAA appearances
  • Back-2-Back First Four victories that put Southern on the national map

They helped turn Southern into a program that expects to dance in March. The 2026 tournament run may have ended in the first round, but the story is far from over.

Because long after the final score fades, what remains is:

  • The banners raised
  • The history rewritten
  • The culture established

And most importantly… A group of seniors who left Southern better than they found it. This wasn't just the end of the season, it was the closing od a championship run and the foundation for the next one.
