BATON ROUGE, LA — Southern University women's basketball junior forward DeMya Porter has been named to the Preseason First Team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference, the league announced. The SWAC's head coaches and sports information directors vote on the preseason all-conference teams.
Porter enters her junior campaign poised for another strong season after a stellar sophomore year for the Jaguars. She appeared in all 32 games last season, made 28 starts, and averaged 9.6 points and 5.2 rebounds in 20.6 minutes per game.
The forward was highly efficient around the basket, connecting on 133 of 260 field-goal attempts for a team-impacting 51.2% shooting percentage. Porter finished the season with 306 points and 167 rebounds, including 85 offensive boards.
Her impact extended beyond scoring and rebounding. Porter recorded 55 steals, 34 assists and 33 blocked shots while providing a presence on both ends of the floor.
Porter has also been a key contributor during one of the most successful stretches in recent Southern women's basketball history. In each of her first two seasons, she helped the Jaguars capture the SWAC Tournament championship and earn a victory in the NCAA Tournament First Four.
Those postseason victories sent Southern into the NCAA Tournament field of 64 in consecutive seasons.
With two conference tournament championships and two NCAA Tournament First Four victories already on her résumé, Porter enters her junior season as one of the SWAC's recognized top players and a key piece of the Jaguars' pursuit of continued championship success.
