Baton Rouge, LA -- The Southern University women's basketball team defeated Southwestern Athletic Conference rival Grambling State University Lady Tigers 55-54. Head coach Sandy Pugh earned her 101st win while "on the bluff."
"We knew this team would be tough," said Pugh. "They have a good inside and outside game."
Southern (6-6, 3-0) was once again lead by All-American candidate Rolanda Monroe as she finished the game with 21 points. Monroe also tied Cherise Sims for most three-point field goals made in the history of women's basketball at SU.
"Rolanda is very important to the program," Pugh said. "She is a four year captain, everybody loves her and she will go on after basketball and represent Southern at higher levels."
Southern outscored Grambling in the paint 22-10 and came away with 27 points off of turnovers. The bench came through for the blue and Gold as they outscored GSU bench 32-10. They were 10 ties and five lead changes as Southern pull away with their third straight SWAC victory.
Fall `05 graduate Ashley Blake finished the game with 13 points. Sophomore Indi Johnson ended the game with seven rebounds and seven points.
The Jaguars return to the F.G. Clark Activity Center on Monday, January 9th as they welcome Jackson State University. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
