A Jaguar Legacy: Celebrating the Coaching Career of Coach Jeffrey Conyers

After nearly three decades of dedication, leadership, and excellence, Jeffrey Conyers closes the chapter on an extraordinary career as the head coach of the Southern University Men's and Women's Tennis Program. Jeff has retired from coaching and will continue serving Southern Athletics in a new role within athletic department business operations and assistant game day operations.

Conyers recently completed his 24th season guiding the Jaguars, leaving behind a legacy defined not only by championships and victories, but by the countless student-athletes he mentored and the standard of excellence he helped establish.

During his tenure as head coach, Conyers compiled an impressive career record with over 155 wins and cemented his place among the most successful coaches in Southern University tennis history. He became the fifth head coach in the program's history, following the footsteps of Howard Minnis, Clifton Johnson, Isiaka Akambi, and Eric Street.

Before taking over the program, Conyers spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Southern, preparing for the leadership role that would soon make him a Jaguar legend.

From the beginning, Conyers set the tone for success. In his first season as head coach in 2002, he guided Southern to a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship in both men's and women's and NCAA Tournament appearance. That success was only the beginning.

Over the next several seasons, Conyers continued to elevate the Jaguar program, leading the women's team to three additional consecutive SWAC Championships and NCAA appearances from 2003 through 2005 and becoming the only program to win six consecutive SWAC Championships from 2010 through 2015.

Throughout his career, Conyers maintained a culture built on discipline, commitment, teamwork, and pride in wearing the Jaguar uniform. Affectionately known as "Championship Conyers" around the athletic department.

His teams captured an incredible 10 SWAC Women's Tennis Championships during his tenure:

Women's SWAC Championships:
2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015

He also guided Southern to three HBCU National Championships: 2009, 2010 and 2011

Coach Conyers' influence extended beyond the women's program as well, helping the Southern men's tennis program reach championship heights with four SWAC titles before the program was cut in 2009 but later reinstated in 2023:

Men's SWAC Championships:
2002, 2003, 2004, 2008

The success of Conyers' programs was consistently recognized by his peers. He earned numerous SWAC Coach of the Year honors, reflecting both the achievements of his teams and the respect he commanded throughout collegiate tennis.

Women's Coach of the Year:
2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015

Men's Coach of the Year:
2022, 2003, 2004, 2008

These awards represent more than wins and trophies—they represent the impact of a coach who developed student-athletes and built a lasting program.

Conyers' connection to Southern University runs deep. A 1999 graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge with a degree in Elementary Education, he was once a Jaguar player himself, competing from 1995-1998.

His journey from student-athlete to head coach reflects the heart of Southern's athletic tradition—former Jaguars returning to strengthen the next generation.

His love for tennis began long before his college days. The youngest of two children born to Imogene and Matthew Conyers of Thomasville, Georgia, Jeff credits his family's support as a major influence throughout his life. His older brother, Marcus, introduced him to the sport and helped spark the passion that would shape his future.

"On behalf of Jaguar Nation, I want to express my deepest gratitude to Coach Jeff Conyers for his extraordinary dedication, leadership, and service to Southern University," said Director of Athletics Roman Banks. "For nearly a quarter of a century, Coach Conyers has represented the very best of Jaguar Athletics. His impact extends far beyond the tennis courts — he has been a mentor, a role model, and a builder of champions in the classroom, in competition, and in life.

"His commitment to developing student-athletes, his consistency in achieving at the highest level, and his many SWAC championship moments have helped define the legacy of Southern Tennis. We are incredibly thankful for the foundation he built, the lives he influenced, and the lasting mark he leaves on our program and the Jaguar Nation."

Coach Jeff Conyers' career cannot be measured only by championships, records, or awards. His greatest accomplishment is the legacy he leaves behind—the athletes he coached, the lives he influenced, and the tradition of excellence he helped preserve at Southern University.

For 27 seasons, he represented the Jaguar spirit with pride, commitment, and class.

As he steps away from the sideline, Southern University tennis celebrates a coach, mentor, and leader whose contributions will remain part of the program's history forever.

Thank you, Coach Conyers, for an unforgettable Jaguar legacy.
