Southern Seeks SWAC Tournament Redemption Against Florida A&M at Historic Rickwood Field

BIRMINGHAM, AL -- At one of baseball's most storied venues, the stakes could not be much higher for the Southern Jaguars. Southern will try to keep its Southwestern Athletic Conference title hopes alive Saturday when it faces Florida A&M in a pivotal SWAC Tournament rematch at historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. First pitch is scheduled for noon CT.

The Jaguars enter the match-up looking for redemption after the Rattlers exploded for a 15-6 victory earlier in the tournament, a game delayed by rain and stretched late into the night. Florida A&M's offensive outburst moved the Rattlers within one win of claiming Bracket A and advancing to the SWAC championship game.

Southern, the tournament's No. 2 seed, has leaned all season on its experience and championship pedigree. The Jaguars finished the regular season 20-7 in SWAC play and entered Birmingham as one of the conference favorites after another strong campaign under coach Chris Crenshaw.

But Florida A&M has been one of the hottest teams in the league over the last several weeks. The Rattlers closed the regular season on a six-game winning streak and carried that momentum into the tournament. FAMU finished conference play at 22-8 and earned the No. 3 seed in the bracket.

Now the rivals meet again, with Southern facing a must-win scenario to continue its march toward another SWAC crown.

The setting only adds to the drama.

Opened in 1910, Rickwood Field is recognized as America's oldest professional baseball park still in use and has become a centerpiece for the SWAC Baseball Tournament. The historic Birmingham venue has hosted Negro League legends, Hall of Famers, and championship moments for generations, giving Saturday's showdown an unmistakable postseason atmosphere.

For Southern, the formula is straightforward: limit FAMU's explosive lineup, avoid falling behind early, and generate timely offense against a confident Rattlers pitching staff. The Jaguars will also need to clean up the mistakes that proved costly in the previous meeting, when Florida A&M capitalized on extra opportunities and controlled the game offensively.

Florida A&M, meanwhile, will try to keep swinging the bats the way it has throughout the tournament. The Rattlers have shown the ability to score in bunches and have played with confidence since arriving in Birmingham.

With a berth in the SWAC championship game looming, Saturday's rematch promises postseason urgency, conference pride, and another memorable chapter under the lights at Rickwood Field.
