Bayou Battle Complete: Southern Outlasts Grambling 13–11 to Finish the Sweep

GRAMBLING, LA -- In a high-scoring, back-and-forth showdown, the Southern University Jaguars capped off a statement weekend with a 13–11 victory over the Grambling State Tigers, completing a series sweep and showcasing both offensive firepower and late-game resilience.

Grambling struck first and built early momentum, taking a 2–0 lead through two innings before Southern erupted in the third and fourth. A three-RBI double from Glenn Green III and a three-run double by Xavier Bradley powered the Jaguars to an 8–2 advantage.

But the game flipped instantly in the fourth inning, when Grambling answered with a seven-run inning, capitalizing on walks and wild pitches to surge ahead 9–8.

The Tigers extended their lead to 11–8 in the eighth, putting Southern on the brink. That's when the Jaguars showed their grit.

In the ninth, Southern strung together disciplined at-bats—drawing bases-loaded walks and producing a sacrifice fly—to tie the game at 11–11.

Then, in the 10th, Kenyon Hughes delivered the decisive blow: a two-run single up the middle, completing the comeback and sealing a 13–11 win.

Reliever Genesis Prosper shut the door in the bottom half to earn the win and finish off the sweep.

Keys to Victory

1. Timely Hitting in Big Moments
Southern consistently delivered with runners in scoring position, turning opportunities into runs—especially in the middle innings where they built separation.

2. Offensive Depth
Multiple Jaguars contributed at the plate, preventing Grambling from pitching around any one hitter. The lineup produced from top to bottom.

3. Surviving the Late Push
Despite allowing 11 runs, Southern's pitching staff made crucial outs in the final frames, stranding runners and avoiding the big inning.

4. Capitalizing on Mistakes
Grambling's defensive miscues and walks proved costly, with Southern converting those chances into key runs.
