BATON ROUGE, La. — The Southern University softball team returns to Lady Jaguar Field this weekend to host Grambling in a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series beginning Friday.
 
First pitch for the opener is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, followed by a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday.

Southern opened SWAC play last weekend with a three-game series at Prairie View A&M. The Lady Panthers claimed the series with a 9-1 five-inning win and a 9-3 victory on the opening day before completing the sweep with an 8-5 win in the finale.
 
Despite the losses, Laila Clark paced the Lady Jaguars offensively, going 4-for-9 at the plate with a home run and a double. She added three RBIs and three stolen bases in the series. Ava Wallace and Asia George also contributed, recording three hits each.
 
Clark has been one of the conference's most productive hitters this season. The sophomore ranks second in the SWAC in home runs (5) and RBIs per game (1.22), third in slugging percentage (.837), ninth in total RBIs (21) and 10th in stolen bases (9).
 
Southern also features several players among the SWAC statistical leaders. Keira Miracle-Tilford leads the conference with five runners caught stealing, while Kira Manganello ranks first in hit-by-pitches. Katiana Maldonado leads the league with 0.25 sacrifice bunts per game, Jordynn Jennings is tied for first in saves and Aaliyah Zabala ranks among the conference leaders in shutouts.
 
Wallace continues to be one of the nation's top threats on the base paths and in the gaps, ranking second in the SWAC with three triples, a mark that also places her 15th nationally.
