PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — The Southern University Lady Jaguars jumped out to an early lead, but Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers used a balanced offensive effort to defeat Southern 8–5 on Friday afternoon at the PV Softball Complex.
Southern (10–10, 0-3) struck first with three runs in the opening inning.
Asia George doubled to lead off the game and later scored on
Ava Wallace's RBI double.
Laila Clark followed with an RBI single, and
Abigail Mitchell added an RBI single to give the Lady Jaguars a 3–0 lead.
Prairie View (11–11, 3-0) answered with a run in the bottom of the first before tying the game in the second on RBI singles from Kayla Zaid and Jade Uresti. The Lady Panthers took the lead for good in the third inning when Isabela Rodriguez delivered an RBI triple and Dyani McKinley followed with a bunt single to make it 5–3.
The Lady Panthers added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly and extended the lead to 8–4 with two runs in the fifth.
Southern trimmed the deficit in the fifth when
Katiana Maldonado stole home and added another run in the seventh on George's solo home run, but Prairie View held on to secure the win.
George led Southern at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two runs scored. Wallace and Mitchell each drove in a run for the Lady Jaguars.
Prairie View finished with 12 hits, led by Rodriguez, who went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a triple, while Zaid added two hits and two RBIs.
Kayla Adams earned the win in relief for Prairie View, allowing one hit over six innings.
Hayley Hinds took the loss for Southern.
UP NEXT
Southern will host Grambling in a three-game series starting at 5 p.m. on March 13. The Lady Jaguars and Tigers will play two games on Saturday starting at noon.
