PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Southern University softball team dropped both games of a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader to Prairie View A&M on Thursday, falling 9-1 in the opener before a late rally came up short in a 9-3 loss in the nightcap.
 
Game 1 – Prairie View A&M 9, Southern 1
Prairie View A&M used a big early offensive surge to defeat Southern 9-1 in five innings in the first game of the doubleheader.
 
The Panthers struck first in the opening inning, scoring on a bases-loaded walk to take a 1-0 lead. Prairie View then broke the game open in the second inning, scoring four runs on a string of hits, including RBI singles from Kayla Zaid and Jade Uresti and a two-run single from Mia Nunez to extend the lead to 5-0.
 
Prairie View added another run in the third inning on an RBI single from Kearstin Tinsley to push the advantage to 6-0.
 
Southern got on the board in the fourth inning when Laila Clark delivered an RBI single to score Ava Wallace and cut the deficit to 6-1.
 
The Panthers answered in the bottom of the fifth with three runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Nunez, to seal the 9-1 victory.
 
Wallace, Clark, Asia George and Jaciee Massey each recorded a hit for the Lady Jaguars in the game.
 
Game 2 – Prairie View A&M 9, Southern 3
Southern showed late power at the plate, but Prairie View capitalized on defensive miscues to claim the second game 9-3.
 
Prairie View opened the scoring with a solo home run from Mia Nunez in the first inning before adding three runs in the third to build a 4-0 lead.
 
Southern responded in the sixth inning with a burst of offense. Izabell Astran launched a two-run home run to bring the Lady Jaguars within 4-2, and Clark followed with a solo shot to cut the deficit to 4-3.
 
However, the Panthers took advantage of several Southern errors in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs to extend the lead to 9-3 and regain control of the game.
 
Clark finished 2-for-3 with a home run, while Astran's two-run blast highlighted the Southern offense. Prestaisha White also added a double for the Lady Jaguars.
