BATON ROUGE, La. | Southern University women's soccer Sheryah Gavel has been named a semifinalist for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars award, as announced by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education Magazine.

The Annual Ashe edition of Diverse: Issues in Higher Education is part of the publication's over a quarter-century legacy of recognizing outstanding, young minority men and women who have distinguished themselves in their academic and athletic pursuits. In addition, student-athletes named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, be at least a sophomore academically, and be active on their campuses or in their communities. Gavel is the only semifinalist from the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

A senior from Lee's Summit, MO., Gavel made 21 appearances with 17 starts during the 2024 season. She recorded an assist against Troy, scored a goal versus Jackson State and played 72 or more minutes in six matches, totaling 1723 minutes throughout the season.

Beyond her contributions on the field, Gavel is pursuing a degree in business management and will graduate in May. She has also earned All-SWAC Academic Team honors in each of her years at Southern.

Gavel is the first women's soccer player in Southern history to be named a semifinalist for the award and the first member of the Jaguars since 2020.

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education will release its annual special report edition on June 5, which will include a full list of the 2025 Sports Scholars.
