BATON ROUGE, LA — The Southern University women's basketball team will tip off the New Year and a new championship chase on Thursday, January 1st, at 2 p.m., hosting Prairie View A&M Panthers in a pivotal SWAC match-up.
The Lady Jaguars enter the game as the defending SWAC Regular Season and Tournament Champions, beginning their quest to repeat as conference champions and return to the NCAA Tournament. Southern is aiming to reach the Big Dance for the second consecutive season and for the third time in the last four years, continuing a stretch of sustained success that has established the program as one of the SWAC's premier contenders.
Southern returns a battle-tested core that knows what it takes to win in March, combining championship experience with depth, defensive intensity, and disciplined execution. The conference opener represents the first step in what the Lady Jaguars hope will be another special run through conference play.
Prairie View A&M arrives hungry to play the role of spoiler, bringing athleticism and familiarity as a conference rival. The Panthers will look to challenge Southern early, making the opener an important tone-setter for both teams as SWAC play gets underway.
With championship banners already hanging, Southern understands the target on its back. New Year's Day provides an opportunity to reaffirm expectations, defend home court, and start 2026 the same way 2025 season ended — with a win.
