Men’s Basketball Opens New Year with 67-58 Win Over Texas Southern, to Open SWAC Play

HOUSTON | Southern University men's basketball team (6-8, 1-0 SWAC) had two players in double figures as they picked up a road victory to open Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play, defeating Texas Southern (3-11, 0-1 SWAC) by a final score of 67-58 on Saturday afternoon at the Health & Physical Education Arena.

Guard Jordan Johnson led the Jaguars with a game-high 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Johnson also added 3 rebounds and a steal. Derrick Tezeno contributed 11 points and three rebounds.
 
Zaire Hayes scored game-high 19 points along with two rebounds, to pace Texas Southern. Duane Posey tossed in 11 points and three steals.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Southern shot 44.2 percent (23-of-52) from the floor, 44.4 percent (12-of-27) and 56.3 percent (9-of-16) 
  • The Jaguars grabbed 39 rebounds, with 30 coming off the defensive glass
  • Jordan Johnson recorded 20 points, three rebounds, one steal and one assists
  • Derrick Tezeno registered 11 points and three rebounds, AJ Barnes had a team high seven rebounds
  • Southern finished with 22 bench points, 18 points in the paint, , nine points off 15 TSU turnovers, five second-chance points and fast break points
  • Texas Southern went 17-of-61 shooting (27.9 percent), 19-of-23 (82.6 percent) from the charity stripe and 5-of-18 (27.8 percent) from three point
  • The Tigers grabbed 37 rebounds, with 15 coming off the offensive glass
  • Zaire Hayes scored game-high 19 points, along with two rebounds 
  • Duane Posey tossed in 11 points and three steals
  • Texas Southern finished with 20 bench points, 19 points off 18 SU turnovers, 18 points in the paint, 12 second-chance points and six fastbreak points
