Lewis and Collins leads cross country teams at Lake Charles Toyota Cowboy Stampede

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southern University cross country teams finished sixth and sixth in the McNeese Cowboy Stampede at the Enos Derbonne Sports Complex. The men finished with 148 points for sixth and the women had 182 points for sixth.
 
The men's team had three runners finish in the top 30 of the 4-mile event, all coming in under 22 minutes. Leading the charge for the Jaguars was Lafayette Collins with a time of 21:04.2 to place him 15th out of 58 runners. Christian Phillips and Marciano Taylor finished 27th and 30th place. Phillips came in at 21:49.95, while Taylor finished at 21:59.9. Bryce Campbell finished 39th with a time of 22:52:23. Cameron Stepter came in 41st with a time of 23:16.39.
 
The SU men finished sixth out of eight teams. McNeese also dominated with a score of 26, placing four of the top seven.

To make the score, the places of top five finishers from each school are added together.

Darrell Lacour placed 52nd with a time of 24:49.63 and was followed among Jaguars Christopher Hugues, who finished 66th, clocking a 25:46.13. Ta'Cardrick Alexander finished in 58th place, clocking at 27:47.52 for the Jaguars.
 
"Lafayette did really well for us today," Head Coach Teremine White said. "He has been practicing well and we were expecting him to run a good time."
 
The SU Women finished sixth out of nine teams. McNeese State won the meet, placing five of the top seven. 
 
The Lady Jaguars took to the 5k course looking to make some noise. Camille Lewis set the pace at 19:56.58, giving her a 19thplace finish. Taylor Williams finished in 36th place, clocking a 21:03.99. 
 
Destiny Mitchell placed 50th with a time of 23:36.17 and was followed among Jaguars Shani Simon, who finished 53rd, clocking a 23:57.61. Kashi Roberts finished in 54th place, clocking at 24:00.12 for the Jaguars.
 
"Camille Lewis did well for us," said White "This is just the start for her, and we are looking for big things from her in the future."
 
"They have been working pretty hard," said Coach Esau Lois "We have been trying to get it going. We have a couple more meets going before the SWAC meet. A couple of our runners are normally sprinters. We are working with what we have, and they are doing a good job. They have to keep working hard and can't hold back."
 
Next Up
The Jaguars will be back in action on September 30 when they travel to Thibodaux, Louisiana for the Nicholls Cross Country Invite. The women will take the course at 8:00 a.m. for an 5k followed by the men at 8:30 a.m. for a 4 Mile.
