BATON ROUGE, LA – Southern University head soccer coach Jeremy Fontenot announced the Lady Jaguars' 2023 schedule Thursday, a 17-game slate that includes 7 home contests at A.W. Mumford Stadium. The 2023 season will mark the 20th season of soccer being played on the Bluff.

"We have a challenging nonconference schedule," Fontenot said. "It is a mental schedule for us. With this schedule, playing two teams that were in the top 25 early last season, to keep those games close we are going to have to be disciplined. Last season we beat Nicholls and kept the games close against Southeastern and McNeese. We feel like we can compete in those games. That will lead up to our conference games."

The Lady Jaguars open up their season with a home exhibition against Northwestern State on August 8 at 5 p.m.

Southern will open the regular season with three straight road contest. To open the season, the Lady Jaguars will travel to Memphis, Tennessee to take on the University of Memphis on August 17. They then travel to Arkansas State on August 20 before returning to Baton Rouge to take on LSU on August 27.

September starts with four straight matches against teams out of the Southland Conference. The home opener is scheduled for September 1 against Southeastern Louisiana University. The Lady Jaguars will then be back on the road against Lamar University and McNeese on September 7 and 10. The Lady Jaguars return home take on Nicholls State University on September 15.

"We came in third in the conference last year," Fontenot said about SWAC play. "We should have won some games that we dropped, and we won some games that we were supposed to be beaten in. Going into conference with the discipline is going to be key."

Southwestern Athletic Conference play begins on September 22 against Mississippi Valley State. The Lady Jaguars will close out the month against Alcorn on September 24 inside A.W. Mumford Stadium.

Alabama A&M and Alabama State will be the first two opponents in October. Senior weekend will be October 13 and 15 when Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M visit the Bluff. The University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff, Grambling and Jackson State will round out the regular season.

The SWAC Conference tournament will take place at Prairie View from November 2-5.

The Lady Jaguars return All-SWAC players in Aniya Clark and Sydney Bellamy along with 11 other players who saw time in 10 or more games during the historic season. Southern added six transfers and four freshman to fill in the missing holes.

"We lost a lot of key players from last season," Fontenot said about last year's record-breaking season. "We filled a lot of those holes with two or three players that can play those positions. We look great, the players that are returning are stepping up big. We are bringing in six transfers and four great freshmen that are ready to work. We are putting players in position where we can have multiple players step up into those roles."
