RUSTON, LA – Picking up 10 individual event wins, the Southern University track and field teams opened the outdoor season on a high note at the Jim Mize Invitational at the Jum Mize Track and Field Complex on the campus of Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Louisiana.
The events got started on Friday with the women's hammer throw where
Lawrenee' Hart,
A'ja Gore and
Schrell Chevalier finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively. Hart would throw a personal best of 141 feet 3 inches. Gore would also set a personal best at 140 feet 4 inches.
Schrell Chevalier would finish with a distance of 139 feet 6 inches. For the men,
Char'Vares Wilson would finish fourth with a personal best of 143 feet 9 inches.
The men's discus would have three Southern athletes finish inside the top 10. Wilson would finish sixth with a throw of 133 feet 3 inches.
Kolby Mathews would find himself in seventh after a personal best throw of 127 feet 1 inch.
Keenan Villery would round out the top 10 in 10th with a throw of 117 feet 6 inches. Hart would come back in the discus and finish fifth with a throw of 125 feet 8 inches.
Uzuri Graves and
Kaila Poole would finish inside the top 10. Graves finished eighth with a throw of 112 feet 1 inch, while Poole would settle in 10th with a throw of 109 feet 6 inches.
Friday's running events started with the 200m where
A'niya Galloway would finish with a time of 25.38 for a fourth place finish.
Trinity Kirk would finish in eighth with a time of 25.85.
On Saturday, Villery would come back in the javelin and finish third with a distance of 162 feet.
Maliek Bush would have a distance of 119 feet 10 inches to finish ninth. Graves would finish fourth on the women's side with a distance of 121 feet 6 inches.
Kinzli Zenon would finish sixth with a distance of 111 feet 11 inches.
Logan Lewis would get things going in the shot put. Lewis would throw a distance of 43 feet 10 inches to finish second for the women. Hart would get another top 10 finish with a distance of 29 feet 11.5 inches to finish seventh. Gore would settle in ninth with a distance of 39 feet 7.25 inches. For the men, Wilson would set a new personal best at 49 feet 9 inches to finish second. Villery's distance of 47 feet 3.75 inches and Mathews throw of 41 feet 7.75 inches would get them a sixth and eighth place finish respectively.
Southern would place six athletes inside the top 10 for the long jump. Bush would finish fifth at 21 feet 10 inches.
Kevon Hamilton would jump a distance of 21 feet 6.75 inches to finish seventh and
Clydeterrious Thompson would finish eighth at 20 feet 11.75 inches.
Azariah Foster would have the best distance for the Lady Jaguars at 17 feet 5.5 inches for a sixth place finish.
Karanay Alexander would finish ninth at 16 feet 11.25 inches, while
Yahria Bass finished 10th with a distance of 15 feet 9.5 inches.
Southern would have three athletes take to the high jump.
Sahnya Lathon would finish fourth on the women's side with a height of 4 feet 9 inches. Alexander would be right behind her at 4 feet 7 inches in eighth. Bush would be the lone Jaguar in the high jump and finish in fourth with a height of 5 feet 10.5 inches.
The Lady Jaguars would take all three podium spots in the women's triple jump. Lathon would finish with gold at a distance of 38 feet 3.25 inches. Foster had a distance of 37 feet 11.25 inches for second and Bass finished third with a distance of 37 feet 3.25 inches.
Soteria Gibbs would finish fifth with a distance of 35 feet 5.75 inches. Hamilton would win the men's side at 47 feet 10 inches.
Demarion Sowell finished third at 46 feet 1.25 inches.
Running events started with the 4x100 where the team of Galloway,
Trinity Bolden, Kirk and
Malaysia Sinegal would finish with a time of 47.09 for first. The team of
DeAnthony Nervis,
Jerun Wagner,
Derick Washington and
Clydeterrious Thompson would be the only team to finish and they did so with a time of 40.99.
Nicholas Scott would continue his dominance in the distance running. Scott would pick up the win in the 1500 with a time of 4:09.88.
Bryce Campbell would finish fourth with a time of 4:16.90.
Lafayette Collins would finish fifth at 4:20.79.
Sierra Session and Alexander would finish fourth and fifth in the 100m hurdles. Session finished with a time of 15.06 and Alexander finished at 15.35.
Jordan Thompson would win the men's side with a time of 14.14.
Devin Sowell finished fifth at 15.32, Hamilton finished sixth at 15.78, Bush had a time of 16.22 to finish ninth and
Terrell Chevalier would finish 10th at 16.26.
Shani Simon would finish seventh in the 400m with a time of 59.87. Nervis would finish third on the men's side at 50.20.
Bolden would continue her dominance in the short distances, picking up the win in the 100m with a time of 11.76. Galloway would finish fifth at 12.42 and
Nadia Thomas would finish ninth at 12.63.
Clydeterrious Thompson would finish third on the men's side with a time of 10.61.
Derick Washington would finish sixth at 10.84.
Rushane Miller would come up just short of winning the 800m. Miller would finish with a time of 1:55.35 for second, just 0.05 behind first.
Christopher Hughes would finish ninth with a time of 2:04.52.
Camille Lewis would take the title in the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.29. Session would finish third at 1:07.06.
Jordan Thompson would make it a sweep for Southern with a time of 56.00 to take home the men's title.
Ta'Cardrick Alexander would finish fourth at 56.73 and
Terrell Chevalier would finish fifth at 1:00.03.
Scott would come back to finish second in the 3000m with a time of 9:23.38. Collins would finish right behind him in third at 9:26.34. Zaire Belvins would finish seventh with a time of 10:28.67.
The final event, 4x400, had the team of Simon, Kirk, Session and Lewis finish second with a time of 4:02.7 on the women's side. The team of Miller,
Ta'Cardrick Alexander, Campbell and Scott would get the win on the men's side with a time of 3:25.74.
Jordan Thompson, Nervis, Washington and
Clydeterrious Thompson would finish fourth with a time of 3:35.79.
