Southern Places 10 in Top-10 at Houston Invitational

HOUSTONThe Southern University track and field teams had a strong showing at the Houston Invitational in Yeoman Fieldhouse on Friday. The Jaguars and Lady Jaguars came into the meet looking to improve their positioning one last time for the Southwestern Athletic Conference indoor championships.
 
The high jump and shot put were the first events to kick off the meet. Camille Lewis continued to improve in her second performance in the high jump. She would finish with a new personal best of 5 feet 6 inches (1.68m), giving her a fifth-place finish.
 
Lawrenee' Hart finished 10th in the women's weight throw with a distance of 50' 11.5" (15.53m). A'ja Gore would finish with the same distance for her new personal best. Charvares Wilson would set his personal best by a foot, finishing with a distance of 54' 2" (16.51m) for a 10th place finish in the meet, and move him to second in the SWAC rankings this season. Kolby Mathews would set a personal best for the second time in as many weeks. He would have a distance of 45' 1" (13.74m).
 
The triple jump would see Soteria Gibbs set a new personal mark with a distance of 36' 8.25" (11.18m). Kevon Hamilton came into his jumps holding onto the SWAC's top mark. He would finish the meet in fourth with a 48' 8" (14.84) jump.
 
Trinity Bolden holds the top mark in the conference in the 60m and she got things started for the track events. She would qualify with a time of 7.57 and would follow that up with a 7.47 to finish seventh. A total of 0.04 seconds separated Bolden with fourth.
 
In the 60m hurdles, Jordan Thompson once again finishes towards the top. His qualifying time of 8.16 and finals time of 7.99 would give him a third-place finish. He now holds the top six times in the SWAC this season, in his three meets. Daisa McKissic would match her personal best with an 8.86 in qualifying. She would finish eighth in the finals.
 
Lewis would come back to run the 800m and would get another top-10 finish. Her time of 2:19.47 gave her a seventh-place finish. Nicholas Scott would have another strong time of 1:55.2 to finish third on the men's side.
 
The 200m saw DeAnthony Nervis finish in sixth with a time of 21.87.
 
UP NEXT
Southern University will travel back to Birmingham, Alabama for the SWAC indoor championships on February 16-17 in the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Jaguars and Lady Jaguars got accustomed to the facility when they participated in the Samford Invite and Samford Open on January 20-21.
