Southern Finishes Weekend With Samford Open

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Southern University track and field teams used the Samford Open to give select athletes additional experience inside the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Jaguars and Lady Jaguars had meets on two consecutive days inside the same building the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship will be held.
 
Lawrenee' Hart competed in the women's weight throw for a second day in a row and had another strong showing. A day after setting a new personal best, Hart would not be far off that mark, finishing with a 15.84m, 51 feet 11.75 inches, on her final throw to finish fourth. A'ja Gore would step up to throw her personal best of 14.14m, 46 feet 4.75 inches, to finish 10th. Charvares Wilson would improve his distances from the day before with a 15.87m, 52 feet 0.75 inches, for a sixth-place finish. Kolby Mathews would also see his distance increase with a personal best of 12.86m, 42 feet 2.25 inches.
 
Hart would get another fourth-place finish in the shot put at 13.05m, 42 feet 9.25 inches. Gore would finish with an 11.75m throw, 38 feet 6.75 inches. Keenan Villery would secure fourth on the men's side with a distance of 14.47m, 47 feet 5.75 inches. Wilson would come in sixth at 14.11m, 46 feet 3.5 inches.
 
The long jump would see Azariah Foster and Karanay Alexander have another strong day. Foster would finish fifth with a distance of 5.25m, 17 feet 2.75 inches. She would finish the weekend with 11-of-12 jumps over 16 feet. Alexander would finish with the same distance but would be given the a sixth-place finish. After running in two events the day before, Clydeterrious Thompson took seventh on the men's side, with a distance of 6.82m, 22 feet 4.5 inches. Maliek Bush was able to finish 10th at 6.74m, 22 feet 1.5 inches.
 
In the triple jump, Sahnya Lathon would see her first action of the season in the event finish with a fourth-place showing with a distance of 11.03m, 36 feet 2.25 inches. For the Jaguars, Kevon Hamilton would get a third-place finish with a distance of 14.69m, 48 feet2.5 inches.
 
Daisa McKissic got things going for the track events. She would qualify second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.86 and would follow that up with a 8.89 to finish third in the finals.
 
The mile would be the next event a Jaguar took part in. Lafayette Collins would set a personal best time of 4:35.47.
 
Jordan Thompson would finish sixth in the 400m with a time of 49.63, setting a new personal best. Rushane Miller would also set a new personal best at 51.00.
 
The 800m had Ta'Cardrick Alexander finish ninth with his personal best of 1:58.28.
 
The team of Shani Simon, Trinity Kirk, Malaysia Sinegal and Camille Lewis would get more chemistry in the 4x400. They would finish with a time of 3:54.36 for a third-place finish.
 
UP NEXT
Southern will head to Houston on January 27 for the Houston Invitational in Yeoman Fieldhouse. Events will not get started until 1 p.m.
