BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Southern University's track and field teams are set to compete in two meets starting Friday in Birmingham, Alabama. The Jaguars and Lady Jaguars will compete in the Samford Invite on Friday and the Samford Open on Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
 
Both events will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's weight throw. Running events will begin at 11 a.m. with the women's 5000m.
 
Southern will be looking to continue to build momentum they gained from the LSU Purple Tiger. Twelve different athletes placed inside the top-5 of their events, with the men's 4x400 taking home the title.
 
With only three indoor meets remaining before the Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, the Jaguars and Lady Jaguars will be looking to position themselves for a chance to come away with a title.
 
Twenty-one athletes currently sit inside the top-10 in SWAC standings, 12 currently in the top-5 and three holding onto the top spot. Southern has a mix of returners and newcomers that have helped put them in a good position after the first meet.
 
Trinity Bolden's times of 7.56 and 7.48 would both be good enough to hold the top spot in the SWAC women's 60m. Bolden's qualifying time would be good enough for the final spot in the finals where she would finish fifth overall and the top collegiate runner, only missing the top spot by 0.36 seconds.
 
Jordan Thompson won his heat in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.08 seconds and would come back with a new personal best of 7.92 for a third place finish. Both of his times would also be enough to claim the top spot in the SWAC standings.
 
The final top SWAC spot belongs to Kevon Hamilton in the triple jump with a distance of 15.19m. All five of Hamilton's jumps would have landed him inside the top-3 in the SWAC standings, with two of them giving him the top spot.
