D'IBERVILLE, MS – The Lady Jaguars came into the final day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Round-Up in a tie for first with Texas Southern but after falling to them in the first game, they would finish in second. Southern (35-30, 10-4) would roll three more 1,000-pin games at Cypress Lanes in D'Iberville, Mississippi.
"We had a rough start but we were able to regroup," head coach
Barry Doyle said. "We bowled well the rest of the day. Coming off the holidays and only having one week of practice, I could not be more proud of this team's performance all weekend"
Southern and Texas Southern came into the first game on the final day tied for first and the winner would take the advantage moving forward. The Lady Jaguars started out slow but were able to finish with solids games, however, that was not enough as TSU was able to pull out the game 988-840.
Nyla Wilson was high at 193, followed by
Kelsey Quinney and
Alanna Coward with 172 each.
After taking Grambling's best shot on Friday, the Lady Jaguars did not want to leave any doubt on who was the best HBCU in Louisiana. Looking to give Southern four wins over the other school on the weekend, men's and women's basketball defeated GSU Saturday, they did just that in dominating fashion. Four Lady Jaguars shot over 200, lead by Quinney with a 225. Coward finished with a 215, followed by
Raja Anderson at 207 and Wilson with a 203.
Jailyn Rogers finished the rout with a 192. Southern would come away with a 1,041-693 victory.
After having an uncharacteristic start to the day, Rogers stepped up her game against Prairie View A&M. After starting with the front six, her seventh shot would run high and go through the nose. She would cover and continue to string the strikes together. An unfortunate 8-10 split in the 11th would have her finish with a 264. Anderson's 209, Quinney's 190 and Coward's 184 would help avenge the 12-pin loss the day before and give the Lady Jaguars another 1,000 pin game in the 1,015-948 win.
Florida A&M was all that stood between Southern and strong finish. The game was close throughout, but the Lady Jaguars were able to put up some strings of strikes to give them the 1,063-1,000. Rogers came away with another big game, 246, to lead the charge. Wilson came away with another 200 at 225 and Anderson was right on her heels at 224. Coward would finish the tournament with a 189, while Quinney finished with 180.
"We had four bowlers finish in the top-15, three in the top-10," Doyle said about his team. "It shows that they performed well as a team. I am content being one game out of first. We still have one more Round-Up to go. We have more work to do."
As a team, the Lady Jaguars would average 194.9 for the 70-game individual competition. Rogers would finish eighth in the individual standings based on average with a 2,913 for a 208.7 average, Coward would finish eighth, 2,669 for 13 games and 205.31 avg, Anderson finished 10th, 1,202 for a 200.33 avg. for six games and Quinney would finish 14th, 2,691 for a 192.21 avg. Wilson (183.75),
Lindsey Ugas (180) and
Kymberly Jackson (178.1) would all finish above their season average.
