BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southern University cross country teams finished third and sixth in the LSU Invitational at the University Club. The men finished with 91 points for third and the women had 144 points for sixth.
The men's team had four runners finish in the top 25 of the 6k event, all coming in under 22 minutes. Leading the charge for the Jaguars was
Nicholas Scott with a personal best of 19:56.5 to place him 15th out of 50 runners.
Lafayette Collins and Christian Phillips finished just two second apart in 20th and 21st place. Collins came in at 20:45.0, while Phillips finished at 20:47.3. Bryce Campbell was the other Jaguar to finish in the top 25. Campbell came in 24th with a time of 21:07.7.
"Nick did really well for us today," Head Coach
Teremine White said. "He has been practicing well and we were expecting him to drop his time. He is the leader of our group and the lone senior. We expect him to do better in the future."
Ta'Cardrick Alexander and Zaire Belvins were the final two Jaguars to cross the finish line. Alexander had a time of 22:30.6 to give the Jaguars their final score. Belvins came across the line at 24:26.8. Only the top five runners' times counted towards the team scores.
For the first time this season, the women's team had five runners take the track. The Lady Jaguars took to the 5k course looking to make some noise. Newcomer Camille Lewis set the pace at 20:02.7, giving her a 22nd place finish. Trinity Kirk and
Shani Simon pushed each other the whole race and were separated by just a second and half. Kirk finished at 22:55.0 and Simon right behind at 22:56.6, just 10 seconds off her PR. Rounding out the Lady Jaguars were Sierra Session at 24:44.6 ad
Kashi Roberts 26:26.0.
"Camille Lewis did well for us," said White "This was her first meet for us, and we expect for her to do a lot better in the future. This is just the start for her, and we are looking for big things from her in the future."
"They have been working pretty hard," said Coach
Esau Lois "We have been trying to get it going. We have a couple more meets going before the SWAC meet. A couple of our runners are normally sprinters. We are working with what we have, and they are doing a good job. They have to keep working hard and can't hold back."
