BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southern University cross country team will travel across town on Friday morning to the University Club for the LSU Invitational.

The eight-team field will see the Jaguars compete five instate school and a Southwestern Athletic Conference rival. The instate schools include Dillard, Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana, Xavier (La.) and host LSU. Alcorn State and Texas A&M-Texarkana will be the other schools participating.
"We are pretty excited for our kids to be able to compete in Baton Rouge," Head Coach
Teremine White said. "We are still looking for our kids to run in a pack. We are trying to get our fifth runner to move up as we prepare for conference.
This will be the third meet of the season for Southern. The previous two meets had the Jaguars run a 5k and 4 mile while the Lady Jaguars ran a 5k. At LSU, the Jaguars will run a 6k and the Lady Jaguars will run another 5k.
"The returning athletes are running better at this point in the season than they did last year," said White. "We have young athletes that are keeping up with the returners. We are going to have seven guys competing this weekend, which is more than we have had before. We really like the direction our program is going."
In the previous meet, Southern was led by
Lafayette Collins,
Nicholas Scott and Christian Phillips who all finished under 23 minutes. Bryce Campbell finished not far behind with a time of 23:10.51.
"The women have been working hard," White said about his women's team. "We have a couple more girls running this year. They are young and improving every week.
The Lady Jaguars only ran in the opening race of the season at Mississippi College.
Shani Simon was the front runner for Southern with a time of 24:55.5. She was followed by Trinity Kirk (26:37.4) and
Kashi Roberts (27:28.2).
