BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Jaguars are familiar with Championship Sunday as the face Alabama State for the second time in four years. 
 
Southern University baseball program has a rich history dating back to 1949. The Jaguars were the 1959 NAIA National Champions, 3-Time HBCU National Championships, 4 NAIA World Series appearances, 35 SWAC Championships, 30 SWAC Western Division Championship, 18 SWAC Tournament Championships, 10 NCAA Division 1 Regional appearances, 1 National Baseball Hall of Famer (Lou Brock), and 3 College Baseball Hall of Famers (Lou Brock, Pete Barnes and Danny Goodwin).  
 
In 2019, Southern and Alabama State met in New Orleans, LA for an opportunity to represent the Southwestern Athletic Conference in the NCAA Tournament. Fast forward to 2022 the Jags and Hornets is in a new city with the same goal at hand, to get an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. 
 
This 2022 Jaguars team is known for their resilience all year. "We fight to the very end and find a way to win ballgames, said SU Head Coach Chris Crenshaw." 
 
Southern and Alabama State met opening weekend in the Andre Dawson Classic in New Orleans, LA. The Jaguars hit a walk off home run to knock off the Hornets 7-6 in the tenth inning. The Jags put up eleven hits in the game led by O'Neill Burgos with three hits and four RBI's. Joseph Battaglia pitched six innings in the contest striking out 8 ASU batters. 
 
The Jaguars went 21-9 on the season in conference play. SU entered the tournament as the Western Division Champions and the number one seed in the West. Entering the tournament the Jags closed out the season as one the hottest teams in college baseball with a 12-3 record in the second half of conference play. The Jags had five sweeps this season. 
 
The Jags went 3-1 in the tournament to make it to Championship Sunday.

The 2022 SWAC Baseball Tournament Championship game will be televised live on ESPN3. First pitch is slated for 12:04 PM.
