Baton Rouge, LA– The Southern University Track and Field teams will take the short trip across town to participate in the Bayou Bengal hosted by LSU at the Carl Maddox Field House on Friday, February 4.
The action with kick off at 9:30am Friday morning with the women's weight throw. The track events will start with the women's 60m at 1:00pm.
The Jaguars are looking forward to the 10 mile trip to compete with some of the top talent in the country.
"We are working on improving our marks and prepare for conference" said Head Coach
Teremine White. "We want to move some of the athletes up to get better positioning for the SWAC Championships and this meet will help us do that.
The Jaguars have continued to rack up personal best and individual wins in their first three meets of the season.
Currently
Nicholas Scott,
Trinity Bolden, and the men's Distance Medley Relay lead the Southwestern Athletic Conference in their individual events. Scott's 1:52.5 is currently the fastest time in the 800 by 2 seconds. Bolden leads the SWAC in the 60m with a time of 7.52. Both times were ran at the Samford Open on January 22. The men's DMR had a time of 10:43.44 at the Houston G5 and Super 22 last weekend.
With only two weeks left before the SWAC Indoor Championships, 30 other Jaguars find themselves inside the top-10. Having that many athletes in good positions gives the team the confidence to continue to build on and up their marks.
"Being in the top-10 gives them confidence going into the next meet," White said. "We want to build on what we have done in the previous meets. These marks show them that they can hit certain times or distances and makes them want to try to top it."
A week after finishing second in the 800, Scott took home the crown in a field of 25 by two-tenths of a second.
Kason Jones had a breakout performance in just his second meet as a Jaguar. He will be looking to improve on his personal best of 21.95 in the 200 and 48.74 in the 400. Both of those times currently sits him at sixth and fourth respectively in the SWAC.
In the field events,
Ja'Carrius Demmerritte has started his sophomore campaign in phenomenal fashion. In three meets so far, Demmerritte has won the triple jump, long jump, and set a personal best of 14.82m in the triple jump in consecutive weeks. He currently sits in the top 3 in the SWAC for both events.
Logan Lewis,
A'ja Gore, and
Alexandria McCoy currently sit in fourth, fifth and sixth in SWAC standings for the shot-put. Lewis had four throws over 13m with her best of 13.37m setting a new personal mark last weekend in Houston.
McCoy has also had a phenomenal year in the weight throw. She has placed in the top 10 in all three meets and had a personal best of 17.25m in the Samford Open that sits her second in the SWAC.
Lawrenee' Hart had her personal best in the same meet that sits her in fourth at 15.68m.
