Jaguars Showcase Depth and Versatility at NSU Invitational

NATCHITOCHES, La. — Southern University turned in a strong showing at the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational, highlighted by multiple podium finishes and a collection of top-eight performances across sprints, distance events, jumps, and throws.
 
On the women's side, Southern made its presence felt immediately on the track. Tashina Alase led the way with a runner-up finish in the 100 meters (11.82) and added a third-place finish in the 200 meters (24.22). Teammate T'La Dewitt placed fourth in both the 100 (12.02) and 200 (24.45), while Demetria Harris (5th) and Sincere Wilson (6th) also scored top-eight finishes in the 100. Rondisa Williams added a sixth-place finish in the 200 and later placed seventh in the 400 meters (57.67), with London Harden taking eighth (59.37).
 
In the hurdles, Taylor Hankton clocked a third-place finish in the 400 hurdles (1:02.80), while Quenteria Brits placed fourth (1:10.16).
 
Southern's field athletes produced some of the team's top marks of the day. Sahnya Lathon won the high jump after clearing 1.67m (5'5.75"). Peyton Funderburk earned a runner-up finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.78m (18'11.75"). In the javelin, Kinzli Zenon placed fourth with a throw of 39.62m (130'0").
 
The Jaguars were especially strong in the throws. Ariyonna Edmond placed fourth in the shot put (12.89m) and third in the hammer throw (47.95m). Mar'Rica Trone added a fifth-place finish in the shot put (12.47m), while Ayanna Hunt took sixth in the shot put (11.49m), fifth in the discus (47.70m), and fourth in the hammer (46.76m).
 
On the men's side, Omari Dupas sprinted to a seventh-place finish in the 100 meters with a time of 10.53.
 
Southern's distance crew dominated the 800 meters. Marcus Delcy claimed the event title in 1:54.29, followed closely by Keeton Johnson in second (1:54.84). Larry Paul III added a fourth-place finish in 1:58.92 to give Southern three top-four finishers in the race.
 
In the throws, Haywood Gallien recorded a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.33m (152'0").

Southern will trave to San Marcos, Texas, for the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Texas State at the Texas State Track & Field complex starting on April 2.
