Southern Falls to Prairie View on the Road

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX -- The Southern Jaguars women's basketball team got off to a slow start in the first half and never could recover falling to Prairie View A&M Saturday afternoon in front of 352 fans inside Williams Nicks Building on the campus of Prairie View A&M University. Final score was 55-62.

Despite only being down by five points late in the fourth quarter, the Lady Jags just couldn't get the ball to fall offensively down the stretch.

Seniors Nakia Kincey and Amani Mcwain finished the day with 11 points respectively. Kincey added six rebounds, four assists and two steals with no turnovers for the Jags. Kayla Watson added 10 points, three boards and 3 steal off the bench in nineteen minutes of play. Genovea Johnson finished with nine points, three boards, three assists and one steal in twenty-five minutes of play. Raven White chipped in seven points and game-high seven boards.  

"We came out really flat today and struggled to score in our half court sets. I thought we played with more energy in the fourth quarter but we couldn't get any shots to fall late said Carlos Funchess, SU Head Coach. We have another tough game coming up on Monday vs Texas Southern so we will get prepared for that one."

The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Panthers to 18 turnovers, picking up 25 points off turnovers. SU played eleven players with nine landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 34 percent for the game (19-56) and 18 percent from behind the arc (4-22). SU shot 57 percent from the charity stripe finishing (13-23)

The Lady Panthers has three player finish in double-digits led by Diana Rosenthal with 19 points, five rebounds all in a game-high thirty-eight minutes of play. Kennedi Heard added thirteen points and seven boards. Jessica Soders added twelve points, six rebounds and one assist.

Southern will be back in action on Monday night as they take on the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern inside H&PE Arena. Tip off is slated for 5:30 PM.
