HOUSTON – The Southern University bowling team came away with an 11th place finish at the Track Kat Klash in Houston over the weekend. The Lady Jaguars defeated four ranked teams on their way to a 6-7 record. They faced five of the top six teams in the tournament final standings and finished ahead of three ranked teams.
"I am very proud of this team for their overall performance this weekend," head coach
Barry Doyle said about his teams finish. "They competed hard and represented Southern well against some of the best in the nation.
Kelsey Quinney,
Lindsey Ugas,
Nyla Wilson and
Jailyn Rogers continued to bowl well today.
Jayden Hauck threw some great shots today as well."
The opening round started with a rematch against No. 21 Central Missouri. The Jennies would take game one, 190-149, but the Lady Jaguars would bounce back to tie the match with a 202-159 second game win. Central Missouri would out last Southern in the next three games, 207-192, 199-137 and 154-149, and take the match 4-1.
The Lady Jaguars would have another rematch in the second round, this time they had revenge on their mind against No. 23 Monmouth University. Jumping out to a quick lead after taking the first game 225-179, the teams would split the next two, Monmouth would take game two 187-152 and Southern would take game three 176-168. Monmouth would take games four and five to take a 3-2 lead, 234-145 and 172-117. With their backs against the wall, the Lady Jaguars would have to win the last two games. A dominating win in game six, 190-128, would set up a decisive game seven. Monmouth would take a lead early in the game, but a spare on a washout in the sixth frame, leaving the 1-2-4-10 pins, and an open by the Hawks would give them the advantage. The Hawks would get a turkey, three strikes in a row, but a 10-pin in the 10th would open the door. Quinney, Hauck and Rogers would get a four-bagger to give the Lady Jaguars the win 230-219 and secure the match, 4-3.
The Lady Jaguars would look to get revenge again, this time against No. 24 Lincoln Memorial, who they lost to at the Colonial Lanes Classic. Southern would jump out to a quick 2-0 lead, taking the first game 200-185 and the second 184-181. LMU would not go down quietly, taking the third 235-212. The Lady Jaguars would bounce back to take the fourth 204-167 and LMU would take game five 212-136. Southern would put that low game behind them and bounce back to close out the match 4-2 behind a 195-144 game.
"This was a great test for the ladies to see how they stack up against some great teams," Doyle said. "This should definitely give them a jolt of confidence moving forward this season."
