HOUSTON – The Southern University bowling team got behind early but found their groove on their way to beating two ranked teams on Friday at the Track Kat Klash in Houston.
"The ladies threw the ball well today," said head coach
Barry Doyle "We had a chance in every match."
The Lady Jaguars got off to a slow start against Monmouth University, shooting a 157 first game to put them behind by 31. They followed that with a huge 239 second game to take a slight advantage after two. Neither team could find their grove on the right lane and unfortunately for the Lady Jaguars, that would be the lane they ended the match on. They would fall by a 963-896 final.
Southern would take on their first ranked team on the weekend in No. 21 Central Missouri in the second match. They found their footing early and took the lead after the first game 175-157. CMU would close the game some with a 202-191 second game, but the Lady Jaguars would outscore the Jennies to get a 84-pin win, 931-847.
The Lady Jaguars would find themselves in a fight against Delaware State halfway through the day. DSU would take an early lead at 203-184 after the first game. The Hornets would squeak out the second game before the Lady Jaguars came back and cut the lead but would come up short in the end, falling by 16 pins, 961-945.
Another power would be the next challenge for the Lady Jaguars when they took on No. 7 North Carolina A&T. NCAT would take the first game 211-172. Southern would catch fire in the second game, starting the game with nine strikes in a row and looking for perfection. The first ball in the 10th would hook a little too much and they would have to settle for a 277, giving them a 75-pin lead. The Aggies would respond with a big game of their own to regain the lead. North Carolina A&T would pull out the match in the final two games for a 1,087-1,001 win.
The Lady Jaguars would take on their third ranked team on the day in the final match against No. 20 Lewis University. Southern would come out slow in the final match, falling behind after the first two games by 27 but would bounce back. The Lady Jaguars would take the lead after a 234 third game and followed that with a 223, giving them an 88 pin lead. They would go on for their second straight 1,000 pin set with a 1,001-870 victory.
"Kelsey Quinney, Raja Anderson and Jailyn Rogers threw the ball extremely well all day making big shots consistently," Doyle said about different bowlers stepping up. "Kymberly Jackson entered play in the second match and bowled well the rest of the day. Lindsey Ugas entered the last match and threw six crushing strikes of her eight shots today."
