Two Southern Runners Earn All-Conference at SWAC Championship

TALLAHASSEE, FL – The Southern University cross country teams had two runners claim top 10 finishes at the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship to earn All-Conference honors Monday morning at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida. The men's team finished in fifth, while the women finished ninth.

"We were not satisfied with the finish today," head coach Teremine White said. "They went out there and competed. That is all we can ask from them. The men's side was more competitive this year."

Nicholas Scott finished out his collegiate career with his second all-conference performance. Finishing with a time of 26:53.7, Scott finished in 10th with his new personal best. Lafayette Collins was not far behind, finishing at 27:46.6 for a 21st place finish.

"Nick is our lone senior," White continued. "He has been performing really well this year. He has been a great leader for us and will be handing over that role to Lafayette. He has always wanted to run and has done an excellent job in finishing in the top 10 the past two years."

Bryce Campbell, Ta'Cardrick Alexander and Christian Phillips all finished under the 30-minute mark. Campbell and Phillips, running in their first SWAC championship, finished with times of 29:00.7 and 29:47.5, respectively. Alexander set a personal best at 29:29.9. Zaire Belvins (30:21.9) and Christopher Huges (31:37.8) were the final Jaguars to cross the finish line.

Camille Lewis found herself finishing her first SWAC championship in seventh place with a time of 20:10.8, good enough for All-Conference honors. Trinity Kirk has seen her times improve with each race, and she finished the championship with a new personal best of 21:47.3 for a 21st place finish.

"Camille has done well for us this year," White said about the transfer. "Every time she came out and ran, her time has dropped. Shani (Simon) was not able to run for us, so we needed someone to step up. Trinity is normally a sprinter and dropped her time today, which was big for us. "

A new personal best by Sierra Sessions would give Southern their third runner to cross the finish line at 23:16.7. Destiny Mitchell and Kashi Roberts would push each other most of the race, finishing just six-tenths of a second apart. Mitchell got the slight edge at 24:33.8, while Roberts finished at 24:34.4.
