Southern Dominates LSU-Shreveport 69-41 at Home

BATON ROUGE, LA -- The Southern University women's basketball team had a slow start the first 15 minutes of the contest before picking up the pace forcing turnover after turnover to blow past Louisiana State University-Shreveport by double digits on Tuesday night inside F. G. Clark Activity Center. Final score was 69-41.

SU picked up intensity around the 4 minute mark of the second quarter taking a 30-27 lead into the half. The Lady Jags out scored the Lady Pilots 39-14 to blow the lead wide open in the second half.

Senior guard Kayla Watson led all scorers with 14 points, five rebounds and 4 steals in twenty-four minutes of play. Aleighyah Fontenot and Genovea Johnson played huge for the Lady Jags scoring eleven points each off the bench. Johnson grabbed four boards and picked up two steals in twenty-one minutes of play.

"Tonight I didn't think we came out with a lot of energy for some reason. We had a really good practice on yesterday and I thought we were ready to go. After a sluggish first half we picked up our defensive intensity the second half and that helped us to get the win said Carlos Funchess, SU Head Coach. We will go back  watch the game and make the necessary adjustments it take to get better."

The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Pilots to 29 turnovers, picking up 26 points off turnovers. SU played all thirteen players with eleven landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 46 percent for the game (31-67) and 23 percent from behind the arc (3-13). SU shot 40 percent from the charity stripe finishing (4-10)

DeAuja Thompson was the only Lady Pilot to finish the day in double figures with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and 3 steals. Angel Reese and Ciera Daniels finished the day with seven points each.
